IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) is an international trade association dedicated to the safety and standardization of industrial rope access. This organization is recognized as a global authority in the field of working at height using ropes.

What does IRATA do in practice?

The association and its certified individuals are responsible for:

  • Standardization: Developing rigorous safety procedures and guidelines for work and rescue techniques.

  • Technician Certification: Awarding certifications (so-called "tickets") at three levels (L1, L2, L3) that are recognized worldwide.

  • Operational Work: IRATA-certified technicians perform tasks in difficult-to-access areas where the use of scaffolding or cranes is impossible or uneconomical.

Where do IRATA technicians work?

This system is crucial in industries such as:

  • Offshore: Inspections, maintenance, and welding on oil platforms. Wind Energy: Wind turbine blade servicing and repair.

  • Construction and Engineering: High-rise window cleaning, structural assembly, bridge and dam inspections.

  • Heavy Industry: Work inside tanks, silos, and factory chimneys.

Certification Levels

  • Level 1 (Technician): Performs simple tasks under direct supervision; knows basic rappelling and descent techniques.

  • Level 2 (Experienced Technician): Has at least 1,000 hours of experience; can construct work stations and perform more complex rescues.

  • Level 3 (Supervisor): Responsible for work planning, risk assessment, and safety supervision of the entire team.
